On Rosh Chodesh the Tamid section (Bamidbar 28) is divided among four olim, but the verse count makes a clean division impossible without breaking the rule "no fewer than three verses." The Gemara says "this I did not hear, but a similar case I did" and brings a parallel — the Maamadot reading of "Bereishit."
There they disagreed: Rav — dôleg (re-read a verse / overlap), Shmuel — possèk (stop mid-verse). The halacha: dôleg, and the middle one skips — and this is applied to Rosh Chodesh.
📖 Full shiurThe Setting — Dividing Rosh Chodesh into Four
On Rosh Chodesh we read the Tamid section (Bamidbar 28:1–15), divided among four olim. But the verse count is awkward: "Uvyom HaShabbat" is only two verses, "Uvrashei chodsheichem" is five. One cannot divide without breaking the rule: do not begin a parsha with fewer than three verses, and do not leave fewer than three.
The Gemara Does Not Solve It Directly — "A Similar Case I Heard"
On this question the Gemara says: "This I did not hear; a similar case I did hear." Meaning: I did not receive this exact ruling by tradition — but a comparable case, yes. So it goes to seek a precedent elsewhere.
The Parallel Case — The Maamadot Reading
As we learned: on the first day, "Bereishit" and "Yehi rakia" — "Bereishit" read by two, "Yehi rakia" by one. They asked: "Bereishit" is five verses — how can two read it without one being left fewer than three? This is exactly the Rosh Chodesh difficulty.
The Dispute — Rav: Dôleg / Shmuel: Possèk
It was stated: Rav said dôleg, and Shmuel said possèk. Rav — dôleg: the second reader re-reads a verse already read (overlaps), so no oleh is left with fewer than three. Shmuel — possèk: one may stop in the middle of a verse.
The Reasons
Rav did not say possèk: "A verse Moshe did not split, we do not split." Shmuel did not say dôleg: a decree because of those entering and those leaving — lest one who enters or exits mid-reading misjudge what was read.
An Objection on Shmuel — and Its Answer
They asked: does Shmuel really split a verse? Did not Rabbi Hanina Kara say splitting was permitted only for schoolchildren, since they are learning? Answer: there the reason is "because there is no alternative" — and here too there is no alternative, so it is permitted.
The Halacha — Dôleg, and the Middle One Skips
Rabba son of Rava sent to Rav Yosef: what is the halacha? He sent back: the halacha is dôleg, and the middle one skips. We rule like Rav — dôleg — and it is the middle oleh who overlaps. This is then applied to Rosh Chodesh, so that each oleh reads at least three verses.

🔍 No direct solution? Find a parallel
The Talmudic method: when a question is stuck, find a similar case already resolved. So in life — stuck? Look for a precedent, someone who has been through it.
📜 Don't cut what wasn't cut
"A verse Moshe did not split, we do not split." Some wholes are not to be broken. Honor the integrity of a Torah teaching, of a moment, of a person.
👀 Think of those entering and leaving
Shmuel decrees because of those who enter and exit — care for how others will understand. Before you act, consider how it looks to someone who wasn't there from the start.
✦ "Because there is no alternative"
When there truly is no other way, the Torah finds a path. Don't freeze at "impossible" — look for the permitted opening.

J'accuse les Nations
An eternal testimony before the conscience of the world. A book that shakes, awakens and transforms — with the prophetic force of history's witnesses.
