Why is the name RaShBI hidden inside the Exodus from Egypt? Why does "Lag BaOmer" = "Moshe" in gematria? Why is "Shimon bar Yochi" = "Shabbat" = 702? The Zohar isn't just a Kabbalistic curiosity — it's the operating system of the final redemption. Here are the five codes that prove it.

What is Lag BaOmer? (60-second answer)

Lag BaOmer is the 33rd day of the Omer count between Pesach and Shavuot. The name itself is the date: the Hebrew letters lamed (30) and gimel (3) spell "33." It marks the yahrzeit — the anniversary of the passing — of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (RaShBI), the 2nd-century Tana who revealed the Zohar.

Around the world, Jews celebrate by lighting bonfires (medurot), learning Torah through the night, and traveling to RaShBI's tomb in Meron, in northern Israel. But behind the bonfires hides something deeper: a code that links the very first verse of Bereshit to the redemption to come.

Who was Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai?

Born in the Land of Israel in the 2nd century CE, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was a student of Rabbi Akiva and one of the most influential Tana'im of the Mishnah. After publicly criticizing Roman rule, he was sentenced to death and fled with his son Rabbi Elazar to a cave near Peki'in.

For 13 years, they survived on water from a stream and the fruit of a carob tree that miraculously grew at the entrance. Buried in sand up to their necks, they studied Torah day and night. During those 13 years, RaShBI received the deepest secrets of Creation — later compiled as the Zohar, the foundational text of Kabbalah.

RaShBI is considered a spark of Moshe Rabbeinu. Just as Moshe gave Israel the Written Torah at Sinai, RaShBI gave Israel the Inner Torah — the same revelation, hidden until his generation could receive it.

The 5 Hidden Codes of Lag BaOmer

This is the spine of M. Yéhouda Himi's shiur on RaShBI. Each code stands alone. Together, they form one continuous proof that RaShBI is woven into Creation itself.

Code 1 · "Berosh Galei" — RaShBI is hidden in the Exodus

When Israel left Egypt, the Torah says they went out "beyad rama" — with a high hand (Shemot 14:8). Onkelos translates: berosh galei — openly revealed, head held high. Inside the very letters of "berosh galei" hides the name RaShBI (ר־ש־ב־י). And the word "galei" itself means revelation. The redemption from Egypt carries the seed of the final redemption — and that seed is named Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.

Code 2 · "Lag BaOmer" = "Moshe" = 345

The Chatam Sofer brings this gematria. "Lag BaOmer" written without a vav (ל־ג ב־ע־מ־ר) = 30+3+2+70+40+200 = 345. "Moshe" (משה) = 40+300+5 = 345. The same number. Lag BaOmer isn't only the day RaShBI passed away — it is the day Moshe returns to the world through him, in the revelation of the Zohar.

Code 3 · The final letters of "Ki lo tishakach" spell Yochai

In Mesechet Shabbat 138b, the sages declare the Torah will be forgotten from Israel. RaShBI rises to his feet and shouts: "God forbid!" He brings the proof: "Ki lo tishakach mipi zar'o" — "It will not be forgotten from the mouth of his offspring" (Devarim 31:21). Read the final letter of each word: י־א־ח־י־ו. Rearrange them: Yochai — RaShBI's father. The promise that Torah cannot be forgotten is sealed by the offspring of Yochai. By RaShBI himself.

Code 4 · "Bereshit" rearranges into "Et RaShBI"

The first word of the Torah — בְּרֵאשִׁית — six letters: ב־ר־א־ש־י־ת. Rearrange them: אֵת רַשְׁבִּ"י"Et RaShBI." Now the gematria proof:

בראשית ברא אלהים = 1,202כי לא תשכח מפי זרעו = 1,202The same number. Both verses tell the same story: God created the world and RaShBI in the same act. No universe without Torah. No Torah without RaShBI.

Code 5 · "Shimon bar Yochi" = "Shabbat" = 702

In the Talmud, RaShBI's name is written without an aleph: "Shimon bar Yochi." Calculate: Shimon (466) + bar (202) + Yochi (34) = 702. Now calculate "Shabbat" (שבת): 300+2+400 = 702. RaShBI is Shabbat in human form. That's why he, alone among tzadikim, is honored with a bonfire instead of a single candle. Because Shabbat candles multiplied a thousand times = the medura of Meron.

Why bonfires on Lag BaOmer? The Hod sheBeHod connection

Lag BaOmer always falls on the fifth week, fifth day of the Omer count. Counting from Chesed, the fifth Sefirah is Hod. The fifth day within Hod week is Hod sheBeHod — Hod within Hod, the most concentrated point of this attribute.

Now go to "Mizmor LeDavid" — the psalm we recite every Friday night during Kabbalat Shabbat. It contains seven instances of "Kol Hashem" (the voice of God), corresponding to the seven lower Sefirot. The fifth one is:

קוֹל ה' חוֹצֵב לַהֲבוֹת אֵשׁ"The voice of God hews flames of fire" — Tehilim 29:7. Hod sheBeHod = the voice that carves flames. That is Lag BaOmer. That is the medura of Meron.

The bonfires aren't symbolic. They are the physical manifestation of Hod sheBeHod breaking through into the world. Every spark that scatters from a Lag BaOmer fire is a fragment of Hod illuminating an individual soul.

In 2026, Lag BaOmer falls on the night of Monday, May 4 through Tuesday, May 5 (18 Iyar 5786). The main bonfire lighting traditionally begins at nightfall on the entry of the day.
Why do some men get their first haircut (upsherin / chalakah) on Lag BaOmer?
During the Omer period, haircuts are traditionally not taken — a sign of mourning for the 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva who died in a plague before Lag BaOmer. The plague stopped on the 33rd day. Pesach Sheni (14 Iyar) is the "second Pesach" — a make-up day for those who could not bring the Pesach offering. Lag BaOmer (18 Iyar) is four days later and commemorates RaShBI. The two are distinct, though both fall during the Omer period.
Is the Zohar accepted by all Sephardic authorities?
Yes. The Zohar is a foundational text in the Sephardic tradition, central to the rulings of the Shulchan Aruch (Maran Rabbi Yosef Karo, who himself authored Kabbalistic works), and continuously studied in Sephardic batei midrash.
