Shabbat Chol HaMoed Pesach — the Festival of Freedom — and we read Ezekiel 37: the valley of dry bones. What does this have to do with Passover? It's like delivering a eulogy in the middle of a wedding.

To understand, we must uncover the secret behind the Exodus — through three concepts: the 49 gates of impurity, the Kishta d'Chiyouta, and the Hevel d'Garmi.
2 The 49 Gates — Sefirat HaOmer
Why do we count the Omer? And why did Israel leave Egypt so urgently their dough had no time to rise?
Israel was submerged in 49 gates of spiritual impurity. Each day of the Omer, they exit one gate of impurity and ascend toward holiness — until Shavuot (day 50): receiving the Torah.
You shall count for yourselves seven complete weeks...Leviticus 23:15
And the haste? G-d waited until Israel reached gate 49 — maximum decay, not complete collapse. One more moment and they would have fallen into the 50th gate, from which redemption would have been impossible forever.
G-d chose the precise moment — the peak of decay, just before the point of no return.
3 The Seed Parable — Kishta d'Chiyouta
What does a rotting seed have to do with the Exodus?
A seed planted in earth must decay before it sprouts. But:
Too much decay — no growth. Removed too early — no growth either. There is one singular moment — between non-existence and existence — from which alone growth emerges.
Secret This moment is called in the Torah of Secrets: Kishta d'Chiyouta — the spark of life. Israel reached gate 49: maximum decay without losing the final spark.
That is why G-d redeemed them at that precise moment — because it was the only moment from which growth was possible.
4 Hevel d'Garmi — The Bridge Between Worlds
What is the Hevel d'Garmi? And what does it have to do with visiting a cemetery?
After death, the flesh decomposes. Only the bones remain. But on those bones remains the Hevel d'Garmi — the final breath, the last residue of life. This is the Kishta d'Chiyouta of the departed.
Insight This is why we visit the Beit HaAlmin and recite Psalms — especially on the Azkarah. The Hevel d'Garmi senses the visitor. It reports to the Nefesh → Ruach → Neshamah in the upper worlds: 'Someone has come to honor your memory.' The Neshamah descends and hears.
The Hevel d'Garmi is the bridge between physical and spiritual — the spark that never fully extinguishes.
5 The Dry Bones — Solved
Now we understand. Israel descended to the lowest spiritual level (diyota tachtonah) — enslaved, broken. They were like dry bones.
I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live...Ezekiel 37:5
Ezekiel asks: 'Can these bones live?' G-d answers: Yes! Because on those bones — the Hevel d'Garmi. The spark that never went out.
Secret We read the dry bones at Passover not in mourning — but in triumph. No matter how far Israel fell, the spark was never extinguished. And from that spark, everything was rebuilt.
6 The 50th Gate of Impurity = Faith
A question nobody asks: What exists at the 50th gate of impurity?
On the positive side: the 50th gate = Sha'ar HaBinah = receiving the Torah. On the negative side:
The 50th gate of impurity = the complete loss of Emounah (Faith). Had Israel lost their faith entirely — redemption would have been impossible. Forever.
The burning bush burns but is not consumed. What in Israel is never consumed? Emounah — Faith.
7 And the People Believed — The Proof
When Moses first appeared before the children of Israel:
And the people believed, and they heard that G-d had remembered the children of IsraelExodus 4:31
At the sea — Pharaoh pursuing, waters ahead — they journeyed forward. Then:
And they believed in G-d and in Moses His servantExodus 14:31
Insight 'They believed in Moses His servant' — crucial detail. Moses transmits the Torah at Sinai. Faith in Moses is the very foundation of receiving the Torah.
8 Mimounah — The Festival of Faith
What does 'Mimounah' mean? Why celebrate it at the close of Passover?
The inner meaning: Mimounah = from Emounah (Faith).
Every Seder, we open the door for Elijah, pour his cup — and wait. Mashiach doesn't come. Every Passover. This could lead, G-d forbid, to a loss of faith.
Secret So at the close of the holiday — we celebrate anyway. The Mimounah is the 'vayaamein ha'am' of every generation: Mashiach hasn't come — and we still believe! (Chabad's Seudat Mashiach carries the same inner meaning.)
The Sages promise: 'In Nisan they were redeemed; in Nisan they are destined to be redeemed.' That is why we do not recite Tachanun all of Nisan — and the last seven days are reserved for the inauguration of the Third Temple. May it come soon, in our days.
