Definition
The word Geula (גְּאוּלָּה) is a Hebrew term meaning "redemption" or "deliverance." Its root, ג־א־ל (g-a-l), carries the idea of redeeming, freeing, and bringing back what was distant.
In the Torah, the Geula does not refer only to a past liberation — such as the Exodus from Egypt — but above all to the final redemption: the moment when the people of Israel emerge from their long exile, Mashiach is revealed, and the whole world recognizes the Creator.
Geula, Geulah or Gueoula?
These are different spellings of the same word. The Hebrew is גְּאוּלָּה; in English it is transliterated Geula, Geulah, or Gueoula. The meaning is identical: redemption.
Sources in the Torah
The hope of the Geula runs through the entire Torah and Prophets. From the Exodus — the first redemption — tradition sees the foreshadowing of the ultimate one. The Prophets describe it as the ingathering of the exiles (קִבּוּץ גָּלוּיּוֹת), the return to Zion, and a time when "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea" (Isaiah 11:9).
The Sages, in the Talmud and the Zohar, reveal its secrets: the stages, the signs that herald it, and the role of every generation in drawing the Geula near.
The Stages of Redemption
- The ingathering of the exiles — the return of the people of Israel to the Land of Israel (Kibbutz Galuyot).
- The coming of Mashiach — the king from the line of David who leads the redemption.
- The rebuilding of the Beit HaMikdash — the Temple in Jerusalem restored.
- The resurrection of the dead — Techiyat HaMetim, when all the generations of Israel rise.
Who Is Mashiach?
Mashiach (the Messiah) is, according to the Torah, a righteous king descended from King David. He is not a divine being but a man sent to accomplish the Geula: to end exile, bring Israel home, rebuild the Temple, and lead the world to recognize the Creator. Tradition also speaks of Mashiach ben Yosef, who prepares the way, and Mashiach ben David, who completes the redemption.

The return of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel stands at the center of the Geula. Every act of Torah study, every mitzvah, every act of kindness draws the final redemption nearer.
