The Midrash describes for us an actual battle between Moshé Rabbeinu and the Holy One, Blessed be He:

Astounding revelation: The Holy One knows that if Moshé tears through the final firmament after 515 prayers, he breaks through and He is obligated to accept the prayer!

This is not just a prayer - this is a real spiritual battle!

Ten languages of prayer:

• Tefillah (Prayer) = 515 (ת-400, פ-80, ל-30, ה-5)
• The count of Vaethanan = 515
• All these prayers don't help Moshé Rabbeinu!

Even 515 prayers aren't enough - why?

"Rav lach al tosif daber eilai od badavar hazeh"

In modern language: "Enough! You're bothering me! Stop!"

Rashi's original explanation:

The Holy One protects both their honor - His and Moshé's!

Rashi brings a second interpretation (when Rashi brings two interpretations - the first isn't sufficient!):

Second interpretation: "Rav lach - much more than this is reserved for you. Much good is stored for you."

The meaning:

• It's not "enough talking"
• It's "you have much more than what you're asking for"
• "I'm offering you something greater!"

The Holy One isn't rejecting Moshé - He's offering him a better deal!

The Midrash reveals a shocking dialogue:

Moshé says: "Master of the Universe, You decreed a decree and I request to cancel it."

The Holy One responds:

The logic:

• I decreed that you won't enter
• I've made many decrees upon people and upheld them
• And you would ask to cancel Mine and uphold yours?
• "Accept My decree and don't seek to cancel it!"

The Holy One places Himself on the same level as Moshé - two kings!

Moshé recalls a precedent:

With the Golden Calf:

• The Holy One said: "Leave Me alone and I will destroy them"
• Moshé said: "If not, erase me from Your book"
• The result: "I have forgiven according to your words"

So what's different now?

Why specifically here does the Holy One make a principle of "a king doesn't cancel another king's decree"?

This seems unfair - why doesn't it work now?

The apparent logic:

Moshé Rabbeinu teaches us repentance - so why doesn't he do it?

What he could have said:

But Moshé doesn't do teshuvah for the sin of Mei Merivah!

The difficult questions:

• Why doesn't Moshé mention the sin?
• Why doesn't he ask for forgiveness?
• Why does he plead instead of doing teshuvah?

There's something deeper here that we don't understand!

Moshé Rabbeinu is sealed with the quality of Netzach (Eternity):

Seven Ushpizin according to the Sefirot:

• Abraham, Isaac, Jacob = Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet (three myrtle branches)
• Moshé and Aaron = Netzach and Hod (two willow branches)
• Joseph = Yesod (the lulav)
• King David = Malchut (etrog)

Everything Moshé touches remains forever and ever!

Evidence of Moshé's quality of eternity:

1. The Torah:

• We study Torah that came down through Moshé Rabbeinu 3,300 years ago
• The revelation at Mount Sinai was in year 2,448 from Creation
• "It will not be forgotten from his descendants" - the Torah is eternal!

2. The Tabernacle:

• All the vessels of the Tabernacle that Moshé made
• The curtains, the boards, everything is found in storage
• Under the Temple Mount that King Solomon made

3. The Holy Vessels:

• Moshé's Menorah
• The first Torah scroll
• The staff, the jar, and all are hidden there

4. Jewish Souls:

All the souls of Israel depend on him - we are all included in him!

Netzach Yisrael lo yishaker - the Jewish people live forever!

The secret behind the Menorah:

Moshé says: "I don't know, 'mikshah ta'aseh otah' (of hammered work shall you make it), I'm having difficulty. I don't understand how to make it."

What did the Holy One do?

Therefore it says "ta'aseh hamenorah" - Moshé didn't make it, it made itself!

The true power: Not who makes the vessel, but who commissions it - he's the one who gives it eternal power!

Everything Moshé touches is sealed with the quality of eternity with God's help!

The Gemara asks about the Psalm of Asaf:

"A psalm of Asaf, O God, nations have come into Your inheritance"

The question: How do you say "psalm" about destruction? You should say "lament"!

The amazing answer:

The message: The Holy One took out His anger on the Temple instead of on the Jewish people!

That's why there's joy - because otherwise we wouldn't be here!

The logical sequence:

1. Moshé enters the Land:

• The first commandment: to build a Temple
• "Sanctuary, O Lord, Your hands have established" - from the Song at the Sea
• Who would have built it? Moshé Rabbeinu!

2. Moshé's Temple:

• Moshé is sealed with the quality of Netzach
• Everything he touches remains forever
• His Temple could never be destroyed!

3. The terrible problem:

Moshé understands it's better not to enter to save the Jewish people!

Moshé's heroic decision:

This is again Moshé Rabbeinu's self-sacrifice for the Jewish people!

The sacrifice:

• Moshé gives up his life's dream - to enter the Land
• He sacrifices himself for the people
• He understands that the collective good takes precedence over his personal good

This is the greatest example of true leadership!

The Holy One explains to Moshé:

What's the gift?

• Moshé Rabbeinu sits near the Throne of Glory
• He's there on standby
• Why is he on standby? To herald the redemption!

The Holy One keeps him as His "joker"!

Moshé's future role:

When the time of Israel's redemption arrives:

• Moshé Rabbeinu will come out and herald
• Elijah the Prophet will herald the redemption
• He will proclaim the Messiah King
• And then the Third Temple will be built

True eternity:

The perfect vision:

"Sanctuary, O Lord, Your hands have established, the Lord will reign forever and ever"

This will be once and for all - an eternal sanctuary!

Moshé Rabbeinu's current status:

Where is he now?

• Near the Throne of Glory
• On standby
• Waiting for the great moment
• Ready for action at any moment

What is he waiting for?

Our dependence on us:

Moshé is waiting for us to be worthy! The ball is in our court!

Moshé stands ready - the question is whether we are ready!

What does Moshé Rabbeinu teach us?

For those who pray and aren't answered:

The divine message:

The same applies to us - the Holy One plans the best for us!

The golden principle:

When thinking something isn't going well:

Even if we don't understand:

• With God's help, eventually he will understand
• And even if he doesn't understand
• He will have complete trust in Hashem
• That it's always only for good and blessing

This is the trust that Moshé Rabbeinu teaches us!

"The Holy One, Blessed be He, wished to merit Israel, therefore He gave them Torah and mitzvot in abundance"

The deep meaning:

• The Holy One wants only our good
• He gives us opportunities to merit
• Even when it seems difficult - it's for our good
• The Torah and mitzvot are His gifts

Just as Moshé received a greater gift, so will we!

The promise of the future:

When Moshé builds the Third Temple:

• It will be eternal forever
• It will never be destroyed again
• This will be the complete redemption
• "The Lord will reign forever and ever"

Our role:

Moshé waits for us on standby - when will we be ready?

From studying Parashat Vaethanan we learn:

1. When we pray and aren't answered:

Remember there's a greater plan

2. When we sacrifice for others:

We receive something greater in return

3. When we give up personal dreams:

We merit eternal missions

4. When we trust in the Holy One:

We discover He always thinks of our good

Moshé Rabbeinu teaches us that the Holy One always gives us the very best - even if we don't understand it immediately!

May the merit of studying Parashat Vaethanan help us:

To understand that even when our prayers aren't answered
There is a greater divine plan
To trust that the Holy One wants only our good
To be ready to receive His great gifts
To merit seeing Moshé Rabbeinu herald the redemption

Speedily in our days may our righteous Messiah come
And build the Third Temple
Through Moshé Rabbeinu - forever and ever!
