Since the Temple's destruction, the Divine Name appears truncated (Y-H), and the Throne itself is written in abbreviated form (כֵּס).
Amalek, descended from Esau, is the cause of this fracture: as long as he exists, the Name and Throne remain incomplete.
The Kaddish repairs it: Yitgadal (5 letters = Hei) and Veyitkadash (6 letters = Vav) join the Yud-Hei of shmeih to reform YHVH.
The number 11 (5+6) weaves together the five Books, the eleven days of mourning, and the eleven incense spices against Amalek's eleven kelipot.
Reciting Kaddish with intention brings the redemption closer: from Horeb to Kadesh-Barnea, from destruction to holiness.
With G-d's help, let us approach a lofty subject in a simple way. A profound teaching of our Sages states: since the Temple was destroyed, the Name Y-H suffices for the Holy One, blessed be He. Why does the Name appear truncated?
The verse says, "Let every soul praise Y-H, Hallelujah." Yet the complete Name is YHVH. Where are the final Vav and Hei?
Two abbreviations stand out: the throne is written כֵּס (not the full כִּסֵּא), and the Name is written Y-H (not YHVH). Our Sages teach: as long as Amalek exists, both the Throne and the Name remain incomplete.
Amalek is the deeper cause. Seir is Edom, is Esau, whose grandson is Amalek. Amalek is the force of spiritual sabotage: because of him, both Temples were destroyed.
How is this lack repaired? Through the Kaddish. The Aramaic text opens with the words we recite every day.
"Yitgadal veyitkadash shmeih raba" — may His great Name be magnified and sanctified. The precise word shmeih (His Name) unveils the secret mechanism of repair.
We then join this Hei-Vav pair to the Yud-Hei contained in shmeih: Y-H + V-H forms the complete Tetragrammaton YHVH. Thus the Kaddish reconstitutes the holy Name letter by letter.
According to a secret of the Arizal, the five Books of the Torah correspond to the components of the Name YHVH.
Genesis answers to the tip of the Yud (the beginning); Exodus to the Yud (revelation); Leviticus to the first Hei (holiness); Numbers to the Vav (connection); and Deuteronomy to the final Hei (completion).
"Eleven days from Horeb, by way of Mount Seir, until Kadesh-Barnea." Eleven is 5 + 6 = Hei-Vav: an allusion to the lack and its repair, encoded in the very geography of the journey.
The year's mourning cycle reflects this number: the fast of the 17th of Tammuz (breach of the wall), the fast of the 10th of Tevet (start of the siege), and the Nine Days from Rosh Chodesh Av to Tisha B'Av — that is, 9 + 1 + 1 = 11 days.
The full journey traces the spiritual path: from Horeb, a state of destruction; through Mount Seir, the confrontation with Amalek; until Kadesh-Barnea, the arrival at holiness — the sign of redemption.
Rabbi Chanania teaches that the Holy One, blessed be He, wished to grant merit to Israel; therefore He gave them abundant Torah and mitzvot, "to make the Torah great and glorious."
