🔁 The Torah makes small changes — and the teaching is hidden within them.

⚔️ Avenging Midian: Bilaam’s counsel, the daughters of Midian, the plague of 24,000. Hashem says “vengeance of Israel” — Moshe says “vengeance of Hashem.” To strike Israel is to strike Hashem.

👶 Gad & Reuven asked for sheepfolds first — Moshe reversed it: cities for your children first. Children come first; property is secondary.

🏠 The source: Yaakov — “he built a house, and for his livestock he made booths.” Money = zuzim, from “zaz” (moving).

🕯️ The journeys & the “black list”: mention in reproach scours the sin. Moshe is buried across the Jordan — to bring them in himself at the resurrection.

1 The Context — the Torah’s Small Changes

After the laws of vows and oaths, the Torah brings Israel’s war against Midian. Note this: at times the Torah makes small changes, and through them it asks us to study and grasp what it truly wants to teach us.

2 Avenging Midian — Why Them?
Avenge the children of Israel against the Midianites Bamidbar 31:2

At the end of Balak, when Bilaam fails to curse, he gives Balak “advice”: the God of Israel hates immorality. The daughters of Midian enter the camp — “the people began to stray” — and as a result twenty-four thousand died in the plague. Therefore: avenge.

3 “Vengeance of Israel” vs. “Vengeance of Hashem”

Hashem says “the vengeance of the children of Israel.” Yet Moshe conveys it to the people with a change:

Arm men from among you for the army… to render the vengeance of Hashem upon Midian Bamidbar 31:3
⭐ Moshe teaches: whoever strikes Israel strikes, as it were, the Holy One Himself. The vengeance of Israel is the vengeance of Hashem.
4 Gad and Reuven — the Request

The tribes of Gad and Reuven and half of Menashe ask for an inheritance east of the Jordan, saying:

We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones Bamidbar 32:16

First — pens for the flock and the property; only afterward — cities for the children.

5 Moshe Reverses the Order — a Foundation in Education
Build for yourselves cities for your little ones, and pens for your flocks Bamidbar 32:24
Notice the reversal: they asked for “sheepfolds” first — Moshe changes it: “cities for your little ones” first, and only then “pens for your flocks.”
⭐ What do you place at the top of your priorities — property and materialism, or your children? Moshe says: property is secondary. The children come first.
6 The Source — Yaakov Avinu

Where did Moshe learn this? From Yaakov Avinu, as he parted from Esav:

He built himself a house, and for his livestock he made booths Bereshit 33:17

A house is stable and permanent: there are the children, the wife, education, the Shabbat table. A booth (sukkah) is temporary. For the livestock — booths. How is money called in the language of the Gemara? Zuzim — from the root “zaz,” that which moves and shifts, here today and gone tomorrow.

7 “These Are the Journeys” — and the “Black List”

Why does the Torah count all the journeys? To recall the shame of the desert generation — and the very engagement with it scours and atones for the sin.

So too in the Mishna: Doeg the Edomite and Achitophel — “they have no share in the World to Come.” If they are ultimately forgiven, why mention them? Rather — the very mention, in reproach, is what scours away the sin. This is the same principle as “from their journeys.”
8 Moshe in Ever HaYarden — Responsibility until the Resurrection

Moshe Rabbenu does not enter the land, and is buried across the Jordan — by choice. “I brought them out of Egypt; the responsibility is mine to bring them into the land as well.”

When Mashiah comes and the resurrection takes place, Moshe himself will bring them into the Land of Israel and the Temple will be built, speedily in our days. Amen.
