The promise "the land upon which you lie" seems to be only four cubits: Rashi teaches that Hashem folded the whole Land of Israel beneath Yaakov.

The Patriarchs are the seed and root of Israel: each of their acts echoes to the end of generations, down to 1948 and the Six-Day War.

Like the first drop that begins carving the rock (Rabbi Akiva), a tiny action has an invisible yet real impact — the spiritual butterfly effect.

Upon waking, Yaakov discovers through the initials of "Achen veAnochi" that his own face is that of Adam Harishon in the Merkava.

The Ta'amim (ba'A / BA'a) reveal how Yaakov recognized Rachel: the shepherds signal to him "there she is!"

1 The Promise of the Land: A Fundamental Question

After Yaakov dreamed of the ladder set on earth with its top reaching heaven, and the angels of G-d ascending and descending, he hears the word of Hashem.

"And behold, Hashem stood above him and said: I am Hashem, the G-d of Avraham your father and the G-d of Yitzhak. The land upon which you are lying, I will give it to you and to your descendants."

The difficulty How much space does a person occupy while lying down? About two meters by one, that is, four cubits (ארבע אמות). Is that the whole promise to Yaakov, two square meters in the Land of Israel? This is precisely the difficulty the literal verse presents.
2 Rashi's Explanation: The Folding of the Land
Rashi: "Lying upon it"? The Holy One blessed be He folded all the Land of Israel under him, hinting that it would be easy to conquer for his children, like the four cubits which are a person's space.
The Midrash's image Imagine that Hashem took the map of all the Land of Israel, folded it, placed it under Yaakov Avinu's back, and said: "The land upon which you are lying, I will give it to you." Rashi adds the reason: to signify that the land would be easy to conquer for his children.
3 The Secret of the Patriarchs: The Roots of Israel

Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov are the roots of the people of Israel, and everything that happens to them occurs in the seed, in the root of the tree.

The mango seed Within a mango seed already lies all that will emerge from it: the tree, the taste, color, and smell of the fruit, the color of the leaves and branches. Everything depends on what exists in that small seed. So the Patriarchs are the capsules of the entire reality of the people of Israel until the coming of Mashiach: every small step they took has repercussions until the end of all generations.

This is why Yaakov's lying on the Land of Israel and "conquering" it beneath his back would help his descendants conquer it: from the seven nations, in the days of Yehoshua, upon the return from Babylon, then in 1948 and the Six-Day War. The root of these victories lies in this verse.

4 The Spiritual Butterfly Effect: Rabbi Akiva and the Water Drop

In secular language we call this "the butterfly effect": a flap of wings here can cause a storm on the other side of the world. Rabbi Akiva, until age 40, was a shepherd. What drove him to become the great sage of Israel we know?

He saw a rock pierced with a hole, carved by water drops falling on the same spot: "the waters have worn away the stones" (אבנים שחקו מים).

All the more so (קל וחומר)! If stones, hard by nature, can be pierced by water, the softest matter, then I, who have a brain of flesh, if I study Torah, won't it enter my head? Surely I will become wise!
The first drop Did the first drop that fell on the rock do anything? Apparently not. But physically, if the millionth drop acted, so did the one before it, and so on back to the first: it certainly began the process, though invisible. Likewise, by lying on two meters of land, Yaakov performed the action that would make the conquest easy for his descendants.
5 Yaakov's Awakening and the Merkava
Bereshit 28:16

"And Yaakov awoke from his sleep and said: Surely Hashem is in this place, and I did not know." According to the simple meaning (peshat), and the Or HaChaim HaKadosh, Yaakov feels that a special holiness has awakened within him, and that this place is not ordinary.

Rashi: "Had I known, I would not have dared to sleep here." Like one who would enter the Holy of Holies to sleep there: Yaakov was frightened of himself.

In the upper worlds is the Merkava (the Celestial Chariot); above it, the Throne of Glory (כסא הכבוד), and above that, the Infinite (אין סוף). The prophet Yechezkel describes the four Chayot and their four faces: man, lion on the right, ox on the left, eagle. They correspond to the kings of creation: the lion (king of beasts), the eagle (king of birds), the ox (king of cattle), and man, Adam Harishon (king of humans).

6 Yaakov's Face Is That of Adam Harishon

According to the Midrash, when Yaakov ascends in his dream and sees "Adam" in the Merkava, whose face does he see? His own! This is the source of the Zohar's words: "The radiance of Yaakov's face is the beauty of Adam Harishon" (זיו פניו של יעקב שופריה דאדם הראשון). To know what Adam Harishon looked like, one need only look at Yaakov.

The secret of the initials Achen (אכ״ן): Aryeh (lion), Keruv/Shor (ox), Nesher (eagle) — "I knew that in the Merkava there is the eagle, the lion and the ox." VeAnochi (אנכ״י): Aryeh, Nesher, Keruv, and Yod for Yaakov — "but I did not know that I am up there, that my face is that of Adam Harishon!"

See the greatness of Israel: we are the descendants, the root issuing from Yaakov, himself "the beauty of Adam Harishon." It is no coincidence that we received the mission to be the chosen people (העם הנבחר) and to repair Adam Harishon (תיקון אדם הראשון).

7 The Recognition of Rachel at the Well

Yaakov arrives at the well, speaks with the shepherds, learns they know Lavan, and immediately kisses Rachel and weeps. How does he know it is her? The Torah lets us discover it through the cantillation marks (the Ta'amim).

וְהִנֵּה רָחֵל בִּתּוֹ בָּאָ֖ה עִם הַצֹּאן ... וְרָחֵל בָּ֖אָה עִם הַצֹּאןBereshit 29:6-9
Ba'A (בָּאָ֖ה) vs BA'a (בָּ֖אָה) The first time, the accent is on the aleph (Milra): she is in the act of coming, approaching. The second time, the accent is on the beth (Mil'el): she has already arrived. In answering "and behold Rachel who is coming (בָּאָה) with the flock," the shepherds make, as it were, a gesture with their face: "There she is!" Thus, from a single word and the placement of the accent, the whole passage is illuminated, and Yaakov knew it was truly her.
Blessed be Hashem forever, Amen and Amen! Rabbi Nachman says: The Holy One blessed be He wanted to give merit to Israel, therefore He multiplied Torah for them. "Hashem desired, for His righteousness, to make the Torah great and glorious."

Rashi teaches that the Holy One folded the whole Land of Israel beneath Yaakov, hinting it would be easy for his children to conquer, like the four cubits.
2
Why do the Patriarchs' acts have repercussions until the end of generations?
As a seed already contains the whole future tree, the Patriarchs are the capsules of all of Israel's reality; every small step echoes until Mashiach.
3
What did Rabbi Akiva understand upon seeing the rock pierced by water?
Kal va'chomer: if soft water pierces hard stone, then Torah will all the more enter his brain of flesh, and he will become wise.
4
What do the initials of "Achen" and "veAnochi" reveal?
Achen (eagle, lion, ox) and veAnochi (eagle, lion, ox + Yod of Yaakov): Yaakov discovers that he himself, with Adam Harishon's face, is in the Merkava.
5
How did Yaakov recognize that it was truly Rachel?
The Milra accent on בָּאָ֖ה (she is approaching) shows the shepherds gesturing with their faces: "there she is!" — thus Yaakov knew it was Rachel.
