Shabbat HaHodesh opens the month of Nissan: « in Nissan they were redeemed, in Nissan they will be redeemed again ».

The great question: was the Mishkan planned from the start (lechatchila) or a repair for the Golden Calf (bediavad)?

« Ben Hur » and the words « Vayakhel » and « Eleh » tie the whole construction to repairing the sin.

On the other view, Betzalel re-created the world through the letters: the Mishkan mirrors Creation.

The women's mirrors, refused by Moses, became the Kiyor — more beloved to God than any other vessel.

The measureless Kiyor teaches that holiness has no limit, and the Kohen must first be able to face himself.

1 Shabbat HaHodesh — In Nissan They Were Redeemed
Two parashiot, two questions Vayakhel-Pekudei and Shabbat HaHodesh: what connects them? And what famous question underlies the entire Mishkan narrative?

This Shabbat is Shabbat HaHodesh, the Shabbat before Rosh Hodesh Nisan. We read, « This month shall be for you the head of months » — the preparation for Redemption. In Nissan they were redeemed, and in Nissan they are destined to be redeemed again. We are already inside the Redemption.

הַחֹדֶשׁ הַזֶּה לָכֶם רֹאשׁ חֳדָשִׁים, רִאשׁוֹן הוּא לָכֶם לְחָדְשֵׁי הַשָּׁנָהShemot 12:2

And now the famous question: was the Mishkan lechatchila — an original plan always in God's mind? Or bediavad — born only because of the Golden Calf, to atone for it and let the Shechina return?

Not an academic question Both approaches completely change how we understand Betzalel, the Kiyor, and every detail. The same verse explains itself differently depending on the answer.
2 Two Great Opinions — Evidence on Both Sides

Lechatchila: the order of the parashiot proves everything. God taught Moses Teruma and Tetzaveh — all the Mishkan details — before he descended; the Golden Calf came afterward. The Shechina had arrived at Sinai and needed a vessel: « Make Me a sanctuary and I will dwell among them. »

Shirat HaYam says « Mikdash Hashem konenu yadecha » — the intention was to go straight to the Land and build a Temple, no desert Mishkan. So why Teruma? Because God « prepared the cure before the blow »: He knew they would sin and prepared the solution in advance.

Bediavad: without the Golden Calf, no Mishkan. But since they sinned and delayed entry to the Land, a Mishkan was needed to atone. Teruma was given early because God « sees what is yet to come » and prepared the remedy before the blow.

Like Megillat Esther Before Haman's decree, God had already placed madness in Achashverosh's heart to expel Vashti: Esther was in the palace before the decree was born. The cure before the blow — that is « seeing what is yet to come ».
3 Ben Uri Ben Hur — The Golden Calf Hovers Over Everything
Why three generations for Betzalel? « Betzalel ben Uri ben Hur » — not merely « ben Uri » — while Oholiav is only « ben Ahisamach », with no grandfather. Why?

Because Hur was killed in the Golden Calf. When the people demanded a god from Aaron, Hur stood up: « How could you do such a thing? » — they killed him. Aaron, who witnessed this, feared he would be next.

The Midrash says: « See! » — Moses told the people: look at Betzalel's face, you see the face of Hur. God rolled Hur's soul into Betzalel, so the Mishkan's builder would literally be the repair of what was broken.

Betzalel was only thirteen and already received wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. His gift: « lachshov machashavot » — to calculate who brought gold from sincere repentance and who from partial regret. Pure-repentance gold went to the Ark and Kapporet; less-repaired gold to the incense altar and Menorah.

The name holds it all Within « Hur » hides the hint of the Golden Calf; within « Betzalel » lies the remedy. Every construction detail aims at one repair.
4 Vayakhel and Eleh — Words of the Sin Became Words of Repair
Why these exact words? Why open with « Vayakhel Moshe » — an unusual word — and why precisely « Eleh hadevarim »?

The Torah chooses its words. Vayakhel is the very word of the Golden Calf: « Vayikahel ha'am al Aharon. » Not « Vayedaber » or « Vayomer » — Vayakhel, so we hear the same word and understand: this time the gathering is to build, not destroy.

And « Eleh » too recalls the Golden Calf: « Eleh elohecha Yisrael. » Now: « Eleh hadevarim asher tziva Hashem » — Eleh, the words of God, not a golden calf.

A total restoration The two key words of the sin become the opening words of Vayakhel. The Mishkan is bediavad — yet also a complete restoration of what was broken.
5 Betzalel — « B'Tzel El » and the Secret of the Letters
And according to lechatchila? What does the second approach say about Betzalel, about « lachshov machashavot », and the purpose of the Mishkan?

Under the lechatchila view, everything changes. Betzalel — b'tzel El, « in the shadow of God » — connects us to the God who created heaven and earth. Not a repair of sin, but the building of a world.

The Talmud (Berakhot 55) says: « Betzalel knew how to combine the letters with which heaven and earth were created. » « Lachshov machashavot » is then not about gold and repentance: Betzalel literally re-enacted the act of Creation within the Mishkan.
The Mishkan as reconstruction of Creation The famous parallel: « Vayechulu hashamayim » / « Vatechal kol avodat haMishkan »; « God saw all He had made » / « Moses saw all the work »; « God blessed » / « Moses blessed them. » Not repair, but new Creation.

So « Mishkan ha'Edut » does not testify that God forgave the Golden Calf, but testifies to heaven and earth: the Shechina has returned to dwell in the physical world.

6 The Kiyor — Mirrors of the Women Who Gathered
Why did Moses refuse? Why did Moses refuse the women's mirrors, and what was God's response?

The verse says: « He made the Kiyor of copper… from the mirrors of the women who gathered at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. » The women wished to donate their polished-copper mirrors. Moses said: Absolutely not. This is an instrument of licentiousness.

The Midrash recounts: in Egypt the men returned broken from slave labor. The women went to the river, caught small fish, washed their husbands' faces; then, with the mirrors, they gazed together — « I am more beautiful than you » — and awakened love. From this « six were born in one delivery ». Through those righteous women, Israel came out of Egypt.

« Tzovot » has two meanings: they assembled in quiet protest at the entrance — « we will not move until you accept » — and they multiplied armies, growing the people of Israel.

God's answer « Accept them. These mirrors are more beloved to Me than all the other vessels of the Mishkan » — because through them Israel was born and came out of Egypt.
7 No Measurements — Holiness Has No Limit
Why does the Kiyor have no measurements? Every vessel has precise dimensions; the Kiyor has none. Why? And what does the Kohen see before his service?

The Ark, the Table, the Menorah all have measurements. The Kiyor? Not a cubit, not a handbreadth. Because in holiness there is no limit. The Kiyor sanctifies the Kohen's hands and feet: one may pour a little water or a great deal. « And they shall not die » — a Kohen who approaches without sanctifying himself risks his life.

Imagine the Kohen entering the courtyard in the morning. He bends to the Kiyor to wash, and what does he see? Himself, his reflection in the polished copper mirrors.

The first message every morning « Before you atone for others' sins — look at yourself. Can you look at yourself in the mirror? » One not at peace with himself finds it hard; one who cannot look at himself is not fit to serve.
8 The Same Object — For Good and For Evil
How are both right? Moses said « an instrument of licentiousness »; God said « more beloved to Me than anything ». How can both be true?

A deep insight: the same object can be good or evil. A mirror used for vanity is a tool of the evil inclination; the same mirror used to awaken love and bring children into the world becomes a tool of holiness.

There is no truly « evil » thing in the world — only incorrect use. The spark is neutral; what you do with it determines everything. The mirror, an instrument of the evil inclination in Egypt, became the holiest vessel, the one that precedes all divine service.
The women's advantage They knew exactly what to do with this object and preserved Israel in a time of crisis. God told Moses: « You are wrong. This is not an instrument of licentiousness — it is an instrument of Redemption. »

One final point: women could not enter the Mishkan itself, but through the mirrors of the Kiyor, from the courtyard, they saw a reflection of what happened inside. Having given their hearts, they felt partners in the divine service.

The Talmud (Berakhot 55): Betzalel knew the letters of Creation, re-enacting the creative act within the Mishkan.
4
Why did God cherish the women's mirrors so much?
In Egypt, with these mirrors the women rekindled their husbands' love; through them Israel multiplied and was redeemed.
5
What does the Kiyor's lack of measurements teach?
Unlike other vessels, the Kiyor has no measurement: holiness is infinite and without limit.
