The first word of the Ten Commandments, "Anokhi," is an acronym: "Ana Nafshi Ktavit Yahavit" — God wrote His soul and gave it to us.
The original plan was for Moshe to transmit the word, but Israel demanded to hear the King Himself: "Rotzenu lir'ot et Malkenu."
Hearing the first two commandments directly, the people's souls flew out twice; the angels revived them with the Dew of Resurrection.
That soul-to-soul contact engraved in every Jew the eternal Spark (the Pintele Yid / Nitzotz Elohi) that never goes out.
Sinai turned green like the Garden of Eden: the Giving of the Torah is the re-creation of Adam and the repair of his sin.
It is impossible to speak about Parashat Yitro without discussing the Ten Commandments (Aseret HaDibrot). It is truly the heart of the Parasha — indeed, the heart of the whole Torah.
The very first word God speaks during this monumental revelation is "Anokhi" — "I am."
"I am the Lord, your God…"
Our Sages reveal in the Talmud (Tractate Shabbat) that the word ANOKHI is an acronym (Rashei Tevot) of a powerful Aramaic phrase.
The Giving of the Torah did not unfold as originally planned. The initial divine plan was for Moshe to receive the word and then transmit it to the people.
"Behold, I come to you in the thickness of the cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you." God speaks to Moshe, and Moshe speaks to Israel.
But the people refused a mere messenger: "A messenger can forget, a messenger can change the words. We want to hear the King Himself!"
At the climactic moment, God began speaking directly to the entire people, with no intermediary: אָנֹכִי ה' אֱלֹהֶיךָ.
The divine voice was so powerful that the soul of every Jew flew out — they died of ecstasy.
Having twice experienced death and resurrection, the trembling people came to plead with Moshe.
"You speak with us and we will listen; but let God not speak with us, lest we die." Of their own accord, they returned to the original plan.
The answer lies in the secret of "Anokhi" — I give My soul. By speaking to them directly, even briefly, God created a soul-to-soul connection and engraved a "positive scar" into the Neshama of every Jew present.
A miracle occurred: Mount Sinai, a barren desert mountain, suddenly became covered with greenery, grasses, and flowers. The proof? The verse warns that "even the cattle shall not graze facing this mountain" — if there were no grass, why forbid grazing? The mountain had been transformed into the likeness of the Garden of Eden.
A deep parallel links the Giving of the Torah to the creation of Man: Adam was created on the 6th day, and the Torah was given on the 6th of Sivan. The Giving of the Torah is the repair (Tikkun) of Adam's sin.
HaKadosh Baruch Hu knew they could not physically withstand His voice. Yet He accepted their request in order to give them this eternal gift: His own essence engraved within us.
It is because of that unique moment — when we heard "Anokhi Hashem" directly from the Mouth of Power — that the Jewish people are eternal. That voice still echoes in the depths of every Jewish soul today.
