The Letter Hei — The Power of Rebirth
M. Yéhouda Himi · Parashat Devarim · Shabbat Chazon · Shiur 3

Devarim is the fifth book — corresponding to the letter Hei (gematria 5). The shape of the Hei is like a womb with an opening below through which the child emerges — this is the power of birth. Hence the segula to read Devarim for one who seeks children.

Avram → Avraham, Sarai → Sarah — received the Hei and the power to bear. Rachel (with no Hei) built through Bilhah (two Heis). And heaven and earth were created with the Hei: "behibar'am" — with Hei He created them.

Ein mazal le'Yisrael (Tikkunei Zohar): once we received the Five Books of Torah, we left the rule of the constellations. Children, life and sustenance come from the power of Torah, by direct providence. And "these are the words that Moshe spoke" — Hashem speaks from Moshe's throat, birthing the Torah. This is the hope in Av: Israel is reborn after every churban.

And Moshe was not a stutterer: "I am not a man of words" — I am not fluent in the current Egyptian tongue (the accent had changed); Aharon is his meturgeman, interpreter (Onkelos). Rashi and Sforno never say he stammered.

1 Why We Read Devarim Before Tisha B'Av

Ezra the Scribe arranged the portions so that Devarim is always read before Tisha B'Av. The simple reason: the parasha contains "Eikha," and it holds the episode of the spies.

And all of you approached me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us" Devarim 1:22

On that night they wept a baseless weeping, and the Holy One decreed a weeping for the generations — the night of Tisha B'Av. Yet there is a deeper idea: Devarim is the fifth book, corresponding to the letter Hei.

2 The Letter Hei — The Womb and the Power of Birth
⭐ Look at the shape of the letter Hei: it is like a womb, with an opening below through which the child emerges. Within the Hei is hidden the power of birth. Hence the segula: one who seeks living offspring should read Chumash Devarim.

Proof: as long as he was called Avram he did not beget; once Hashem added the letter Hei — Avraham — he begot. So too Sarai → Sarah. And Rachel, who was barren and had no Hei in her name, said "here is my maid Bilhah… and I shall be built through her," for Bilhah has two Heis: one her own, one to give to Rachel.

3 Heaven and Earth Were Created With the Hei

From where does the Hei carry the power of birth? Because with it heaven and earth were created.

These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created (behibar'am) Bereshit 2:4

The Sages expounded: "behibar'am"be-Hei bera'am, with the Hei He created them. The Hei is what gave the power of generation to heaven and earth, and it is the source of renewal within all of creation.

4 Ein Mazal le'Yisrael — Tikkunei Zohar
Before the Torah was given, Israel was subject to mazal — even children, life and sustenance. After the Torah was given, the Holy One took them out of the governance of the stars and constellations.

We learn this from Avraham, who received the letter Hei; and once Israel received the Five Books of Torahein mazal le'Yisrael, Israel is not under mazal. Children, life and sustenance come from the power of the Torah itself, by direct providence. The upper line of the Hei separates the mazalot above from the power of Torah — from there you draw your strength.

5 "Eleh HaDevarim" — and the Hope of Rebirth
⭐ The Hei is like a great Dalet (the Holy One) with a small embryo inside it (Moshe). "These are the words that Moshe spoke" — the Holy One speaks from Moshe's throat; from the womb he receives the power of speech and births the Torah.

And this is a great hope in Av: we might think that after the churban there is no chance. But "these are the generations… when they were created" — as long as we hold the Torah, there is a power of birth, and Israel is reborn: after Bavel (70 years), after the Second Temple (2000 years), like a burnt field that turns green again, like the State after the Shoah. As we sit on the floor on Tisha B'Av, we recall that we read "Eleh HaDevarim": there is hope, and the children shall return to their borders.

6 Moshe Was Not a Stutterer — and Leaving the "Kindergarten"

Many grew up on the idea that Moshe stuttered. But Rashi, Sforno and Chizkuni do not say so — Heaven forbid to cast an aspersion on Moshe. On "heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue" Rashi explains: "I speak in a foreign tongue" — I am not fluent in the language.

Moshe grew up in the palace until age 20 and was away some 60 years; the Pharaohs (and their language and accent) kept changing. So "I am not a man of words" — I am not fluent in the current Egyptian. And Aharon, who stayed in Egypt — Onkelos renders "your spokesman" as meturgemanach, your interpreter. Moreover, at Sinai all were healed — any defect would have been fixed.

The lesson: do not remain in "kindergarten" understanding of Torah. There was no apple in Eden (wheat, grape, fig or etrog — not an apple), and Moshe had no horns (a mistranslation of "the skin of his face shone / karan"). Open Rashi and Sforno and delve deeper. May we merit the redemption. Amen and amen.
