The four cups correspond to the four expressions of redemption God spoke to Moses (Exodus 6:6-7); a fifth cup, Elijah's, awaits the final redemption.
The word "kos" (cup) shares the gematria 86 with "Elohim," the Name of Divine Judgment, linking each cup to erasing 86 years of harsh decree.
Through his righteousness, Yossef HaTzaddik canceled four of the five decrees of exile (344 of 430 years), leaving Israel to serve only 86 years in Egypt.
The Sea of Reeds split only after it saw the coffin of Joseph — proof that his merit had settled the heavenly account.
On Seder night God gathers the entire Heavenly court to watch His children learn Torah at the table — described in the shiur as our true, ongoing redemption.
Why four cups? The number four runs through the entire Seder: four sons, four cups, four olive-sized portions. What connects them?
The main reason given in Tractate Pesachim: the four cups correspond to the four expressions of redemption spoken by God to Moses in the portion of Va'era:
I will bring you out — I will deliver you — I will redeem you — I will take you to Me as a people.Exodus 6:6–7
And there is a fifth expression: "I will bring you into the Land" — that is Elijah's cup. We have not yet drunk it, because the complete redemption — the full entry into the Land — still lies ahead.
The five cups, in order: I Will Bring Out, I Will Deliver, I Will Redeem, I Will Take — and the fifth, not yet drunk, I Will Bring (Elijah's cup).
The gematria key Kos (cup) = 86. Five cups × 86 = 430 — exactly the years of exile from the Covenant of the Pieces to the Exodus. Each cup erases 86 years of exile.
2 Gematria: Kos (Cup) = 86 = Elohim
Kos: kaf(20) + vav(6) + samech(60) = 86. Elohim: alef(1) + lamed(30) + heh(5) + yod(10) + mem(40) = 86. Elohim is the Name of Divine Judgment — the gematria of cup equals the gematria of Elohim: 86.
The five final letters — מנצפ"ך — represent five divine judgments. Each equals 86. Therefore:
5 judgments × 86 = 430 years of exile. Against these 430 years we drink five cups (four + Elijah's cup). And the required volume of each cup? 86 milliliters — the numerical value of kos.
3 The Midrash: Four Times "Cup" in the Butler's Dream
The Midrash Rabbah gives a surprising reason: the four cups correspond to the four times the word "cup" appears in the butler's dream that Joseph interpreted. But what does a dream in an Egyptian prison have to do with the Exodus?
And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand — and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup — and I placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand… and you shall put Pharaoh's cup in his hand.Genesis 40:11–13
Four times "cup" — and against them, four cups. But what is the inner connection?
Simple answer The redemption begins here. The moment Joseph interpreted the butler's dream — the butler rose to power, and two years later brought Joseph before Pharaoh. From Pharaoh, Jacob and his sons came down to Egypt, and 210 years later they left. The cup in the butler's dream is the very point from which the entire chain of redemption unfolds.
But there is a deeper answer — according to the hidden dimension of Torah.
4 The Root of Exile — Adam's Sin and Five Judgments
Why did the Jewish people need to descend to Egypt and suffer 430 years of exile? What decree required this?
It all begins with Adam's sin. After the sin, Adam separated from Eve for 130 years. During that time, souls that were supposed to be born descended into impure places. Those souls needed to be redeemed — and for that purpose, Israel descended to Egypt, labored, and through that labor released those souls.
Five final letters = five names of judgment = 5 × 86 = 430 years: the original decree.
"They shall serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years" — 400 years of sojourning counted from the Covenant of the Pieces (including 30 years of waiting for Isaac). Total: 430 years.
5 Yossef HaTzaddik Canceled Four of Five Decrees
If the decree was 430 years — why did Israel serve in hard labor for only 86 years? Who canceled the remaining 344?
Yossef HaTzaddik. Through his righteousness — his resistance to Potiphar's wife, his faith in prison, his constant attribution of everything to God — he merited to cancel four out of five judgments.
The grapevine in the dream = the Community of Israel. Three branches = Moses, Aaron and Miriam. Four times "cup" = the four decrees Joseph knew he could annul through his righteousness.
The calculation Original decree: 5 × 86 = 430 years. Joseph canceled: 4 × 86 = 344 years. Remaining: 1 × 86 = 86 years of actual bondage.
The hint in the Torah — end of Vayigash: "And four parts shall be your own." Four-fifths for the people, one-fifth for Pharaoh. Four out of five — exactly what Joseph canceled.
6 The Proof: Miriam and Moses — Exactly 86 Years
How do we know the bondage lasted exactly 86 years?
Miriam was born when the bondage began — her name means "bitterness." When Miriam was 6, she told her father Amram: "Your decree is harsher than Pharaoh's." And then Moses was born.
6 years of bondage before Moses' birth + Moses stood before Pharaoh at age 80 = 86 years — the numerical value of kos.
Miriam = the beginning of bondage. Moses = the beginning of redemption. Together — 86. The cup we drink on Seder night to erase every trace of the decree.
7 The Sea Split — Because It Saw Joseph's Coffin
When Israel reached the Sea of Reeds, it refused to split. What was the sea's argument — and what changed its mind?
The sea argued: "It is written in the Covenant of the Pieces — they shall be afflicted four hundred years. But Israel served only 86 years! Let them go back!"
"Moses took the bones of Joseph with him" — and the sea saw, and fled. What did the sea see? It saw Joseph's coffin. And through Joseph's righteousness — having canceled four out of five decrees — the sea understood that the account was settled. And it split.
Therefore: four cups = four decrees Joseph canceled = four times "cup" in the butler's dream. The entire structure is one.
"They believed in God and in Moses His servant" — full faith came only after they saw the Egyptian bodies on the shore. Only then did they know: Egypt had left them — from the inside.
8 To Show Yourself — or To See Yourself?
The Haggadah states: "Each person must show himself as if he left Egypt." A second version reads: "Each person must see himself as if he left Egypt." What is the difference?
To show yourself — you are performing, presenting a display for others. To see yourself — it is real. The Exodus is happening to you right now.
We left Egypt 2,448 years ago — but we are still leaving. The complete redemption has not yet arrived. As long as the great Day of God has not come, we are in the process of the Exodus. Both versions are therefore correct: show your children that you see yourself leaving. It is happening now — present progressive.
9 What Heaven Sees on Seder Night — The Holy Zohar
Did you know the Holy Zohar describes precisely what happens in Heaven while you sit at the Seder table?
The Holy Zohar in the name of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai: on Seder night, the Holy One gathers the entire Heavenly court — all the princes, all the ministers of the nations, all the accusers — and says to them:
"Come, all of you — descend with Me to hear what My children are doing tonight!"
And they all descend with God. And He boasts before them: "Look how My children praise and glorify Me!" All year the accusers argue: "They violate Shabbat, they argue among themselves, what is special about this nation You love so much?" On Seder night, God brings them down to witness the answer for themselves.
Give strength to God — in Israel is His pride. God asks us: give Me a reason to be proud of you. Your sitting at the Seder table — that is His answer to every accuser.
Seder night is the only night of the year when all of Israel — religious, secular, in the Land and in exile, in peace and in war — sits and studies Torah. In the Shoah. In Lebanon. In Kiryat Shmona under rockets. This is our true redemption.
