The same letters. Two different worlds. Everything depends on where you place the Ayin — and on you.

Hidden inside the most technical laws of the Torah — the laws of leprosy — lies a master key to reality. Negah (plague) and Oneg (delight) are the exact same letters. Only the position of one letter changes everything. And what determines that position? Our speech. The greatest power given to a human being — and one we can use to build, to heal, and to transform reality.
1 What Is a Human Being? — Nefesh Chayah
Ancient philosophers tried to define man: “a living being that walks on two legs — and is not a rooster.” Amusing, but inadequate. What does the Torah itself say?
And man became a living soul (nefesh chayah) Genesis 2:7
Onkelos translates nefesh chayah as ruach memalela — a speaking spirit. But why speech specifically? Animals also have a nefesh chayah.
Rashi answers directly: “Animals are also called nefesh chayah — but man’s is more alive than all of them, for it was enriched with knowledge and speech.”
The hierarchy of creation: Inanimate → Vegetable → Animal → Speaking Being. Man occupies the fourth level — not because of his body, but because of the power of his speech.
2 Tzelem Elokim — The Creative Power of Speech
Why is speech so uniquely powerful? What is the connection between man’s speech and the fact that he was created in the image of G-d?
G-d said: “Let there be light” — and there was light Genesis 1:3
G-d has no body, no physical form. And yet — He created the entire universe through speech. “G-d said, Let there be light — and there was light.” Words became reality.
Man is created in tzelem Elokim — in the image of G-d. This means man too has the capacity to reshape reality through speech. The Book of Proverbs states it plainly:
Death and life are in the power of the tongue Proverbs 18:21
A practical example: Your car gets scratched. The door slams. You can say “What terrible luck” — or you can say “This too is for the good.”
⭐ When you say “This too is for the good,” you are saying: “Master of the Universe, I recognize Your providence in what just happened. Thank you.” The moment you say thank you for a blow — the blow is no longer judgment. It has become mercy. Your speech changed reality.
3 Metzora = Motzi Shem Ra
Why did the greatest leaders of Israel — Moshe Rabbenu, Miriam the Prophetess, and others — get struck with tzara’at? Is this a random punishment?
Not at all. Tzara’at comes above all for lashon hara — harmful speech. Why? Because whoever spreads a bad name about others is taking the divine power of speech that was given to them and using it to destroy rather than build.
The Sages encoded this truth in the very name of the disease:
METZORA
MOTZI+SHEM RA
One who spreads a bad name
The response is measure for measure: you used your mouth for destruction — your mouth is silenced. Expelled from the camp. Complete isolation — until you return and repair the power of speech you misused.
Tzara’at is not a punishment — it is a repair. “Go and sit alone. Think about what you did with the power I gave you.”
4 Negah ↔ Oneg — The Secret of the Ayin
The parasha says: “And behold, the negah has not turned its ayin (eye).” What does it mean that the negah has not “turned its eye”? What is hidden here?
And behold, the negah has not turned its ayin, and the negah has not spread Leviticus 13:55
Take the word NEGAH (נ-ג-ע). Where is the Ayin (ע)? At the end. If the Ayin were to flip — moving to the beginning — you would get:
נ-ג-עAyin at the end = NEGAH (plague)
→ flip →
ע-נ-גAyin at the start = ONEG (delight)
Identical letters. N-G-Ayin / Ayin-N-G. What determines whether we live negah or oneg? The position of the Ayin — that is, the perspective from which we look at reality, and what we say about it.
⭐ The Sages teach: the prayers of the righteous flip G-d’s attribute from judgment and anger to mercy. The mechanism is precisely this: speech — prayer — turns negah into oneg.
5 Eras Davi → Eser Yod — The Secret of the Ari
The Ari HaKadosh reveals a breathtaking secret about the mechanics of praying for a sick person. The Psalm says: “G-d will support him on his sickbed; You have overturned all his resting-place in his illness.” What does it mean to “overturn his resting-place”?
Hashem will sustain him on the eras davi (bed of illness); You have overturned all his resting-place in his sickness Psalms 41:4
The Ari explains: the Divine Name Havayah — Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh — channels all ten sefirot. The first Yod (י) corresponds to the sefira of Chochmah (Wisdom) — the source that nourishes each person with divine flow.
When a person falls ill — what happened? The Yod moved to the end. Look at what this does to the words:
עשר (ESER)Healthy — Yod at start
→ sick →
ערש (ERAS)Sick — Yod moved to end
יוד (YOD)Healthy — Yod at start
→ sick →
דוי (DAVI)Sick — Yod moved to end
Eser became Eras. Yod became Davi. The sick person lies on an Eras Davi.
⭐ What do we pray? “You have overturned all his resting-place in his illness” — flip Eras back into Eser. Flip Davi back into Yod. Reconnect him to the channel of divine flow — and that is what heals him. This is the true mechanics of prayer.
The source of the secret: Imrat Hashem tzrufah, magen hu le-chol hachosim bo — When the letters of G-d’s speech are properly combined, they shield and heal.
6 The Plague Is Healed From Within — It All Depends on Us
The verse says: “And the plague of tzara’at has been healed from the metzora.” Read carefully — what does the second reading of this verse reveal?
And the plague of tzara’at has been healed from the metzora Leviticus 14:3
Plain reading: the plague was healed — from the metzora, away from him. But the deeper hint: the negah is healed from within the tzarua — the metzora himself determines whether the plague remains a negah, or whether it flips into oneg.
Everything depends on us. We are the ones who choose. At every moment — we can live in negah, or we can open up to oneg. The power is in our hands, in our tongues, in our speech.
So now that we understand how much power our tongue holds — let us use it only for good: to encourage, to uplift, to bless, to sanctify G-d’s Name in the world.
⭐ When we use the power of speech for good — we act as tzelem Elokim, the image of G-d. And in doing so, we bring the Redemption closer, speedily in our days, amen.

Sunday
Read Genesis 2:7 with Onkelos: nefesh chayah = ruach memalela. Ask yourself: how many words did I say today? How many of them built someone up — and how many broke someone down?
Monday
Choose one day this week to say “This too is for the good” to everything that goes wrong. At the end of the day — notice how your inner state shifted.
Tuesday
Meditate on negah/oneg (Nun-Gimel-Ayin / Ayin-Nun-Gimel). Where is your Ayin right now — at the beginning or the end? When you face a difficult situation, what is the very first thing you see?
Wednesday
Is there someone close to you who is unwell? Recite the verse “Hashem will sustain him on the eras davi, You have overturned all his resting-place in his illness” with intention — not as a sentence, but as a prayer. Feel the difference.
Thursday
Think of someone you’ve spoken to harshly recently — at home, at work, on the phone. Send them one kind word today. Not an explanation. Just one positive word.
Friday Night
Before candle lighting — decide: one word you will not say this Shabbat. And one new word to add — of encouragement, blessing, or gratitude.

In the Beith Haknesset during the Torah reading — when you hear the word “metzora” — remember: motzi shem ra. Ask yourself: how many good names did I speak about others this week?
