The Letter Ayin
The eye, the spring, and the gaze that goes further

The ayin came forward in the name of עֲנָוָה (anavah), humility, and of עֵדֶן (Eden).

It was answered that it also opens what uncovers what should stay covered.

The ayin has no sound of its own: it sees, it does not speak.

Its name means the eye, and also the spring.

1 The Zohar account
“Master of the world, create the world through me, for through me begins anavah, humility, and through me the humble rise. I am also the letter of Eden.”

The answer came: you are fair and you carry humility, but through you also begins what lays bare what should stay covered. And though you are an eye, you are silent: you have no sound of your own. You will remain to watch creation; you will not begin it.

2 The eye and the spring

עַיִן (ayin) means the eye — and the same word means the spring, the one that rises from the ground.

The language joins the two: the eye is a spring. What comes out of it depends on what was put in.
3 Seeing further

The eye that truly sees is the one that looks past appearance.

Seventy: the number of the nations, of the elders, and the measure of a man’s life.
