This study was given at the conclusion of Hanukkah, on the 8th day. In the beginning it is written that "the earth was tohu vavohu, and darkness covered the abyss." Our Sages read here an allusion to the four exiles: tohu, Babylon; vohu, Persia-Media (the word recalling Haman); vechoshekh, Greece, which sought to "darken the eyes of Israel"; al pnei tehom, Rome, from which we still suffer.

This is a masterclass in negotiation. Yehuda plays on a double register. A linguistic reminder: in the Torah, vayedaber is harsh language, while vayomer is soft language.

Vayigash — he approached. Onkelos translates "vekarev"; but we also hear "krav," battle. The Baal Haturim teaches that "Vayigash elav Yehuda" has the gematria of "to fight with Yosef" and also of "to appease him."

Yehuda approaches Yosef at point-blank range while saying "I am your servant": alternating slap and caress. And "ki kamocha keParo" carries a double meaning — on the surface a compliment ("you count as much as Pharaoh"), in depth, per the Midrash, a threat: "just as I can eliminate Pharaoh, I can eliminate you too." This tension finally breaks Yosef.

Yehuda recounts that he guaranteed Binyamin's safety to their father: "pen ereh bara asher yimtsa et avi" — lest I see the evil that would befall my father.

What breaks Yosef is hearing for the first time that Yehuda, king of Leah's family, guaranteed Binyamin, of Rachel's family — Yosef's own brother! Once the brothers "could not speak peacefully with him" and threw him into a pit; now, under Yehuda's leadership, they all refuse to return without Binyamin.

Consider: since Yosef's sale, the 12 brothers had never been reunited. First descent: all but Binyamin, with Shimon held hostage. Second descent: Binyamin present but Shimon still in prison. Only now, Shimon freed and Binyamin here, are the 12 sons of Yaakov gathered for the first time in decades. Yosef knows the moment is unique.

The ineffable Name י-ה-ו-ה has 12 permutations, each corresponding to one of the 12 tribes. Yosef understands that this reunion is the opportunity to bring down the Shekhinah to Egypt. For Yaakov feared to descend, and Hashem reassured him: "Al tira mereda Mitzrayma, Anochi ered imcha" — do not fear, I will go down with you.

But the Shekhinah does not dwell in a place of tumah, and Egypt was "ervat ha'aretz," the epitome of impurity. Sending the Egyptians out therefore served not only to spare the brothers' shame: it was to eliminate the Egyptian tumah from the room.

Reread the verse: "hotzi'u chol ish me'alai" then "velo amad ish ito behitvada Yosef el echav." "Send every man out" = the Egyptians leave (external tumah eliminated). "Velo amad ish ito" = even among the brothers, no one "stood" as an ish, a person with an ego: they annulled their own existence.

Like the Kohen Gadol entering the Holy of Holies after annulling his being, the 12 brothers — representing the 12 permutations of the Name — stand united, erasing their individuality, and perform a yichud that brings the Shekhinah down to Egypt. It is thanks to this moment that the Presence will accompany Israel during the 210 years of exile, until the exodus with "great wealth."
