1 Shavuot — The Hidden Day of Judgment
Our Sages arranged the calendar with surgical precision: before Shavuot, we always read Behar-Behukotai — then a buffer Shabbat (Bamidbar) — then the festival. Why not connect Behukotai directly to Shavuot? Why the pause?
The first answer is clear: parashat Behukotai contains the 49 admonitions (tokhahot). The Sages do not want us entering Shavuot in an atmosphere of rebuke. Hence a buffer Shabbat — Bamidbar — carrying us into the air of Sinai, the place of the giving of the Torah.
But the real question: why a buffer before Shavuot? Before Rosh Hashanah, the buffer is obvious — Rosh Hashanah is a day of judgment. But Shavuot? That is the festival of the giving of the Torah — pure joy! What judgment is there to fear?
⭐ Here is the hidden code: Shavuot too is a day of judgment. On Shavuot, it is decreed in Heaven how much Torah you will absorb during the entire year. How much of the immense energy of the giving of the Torah you will carry as rocket fuel through the next 365 days. To pass this judgment well — the buffer is given.
2 What Has Shemita to Do with Mount Sinai?
Parashat Behar opens: "And the L-rd spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai...". Rashi asks the classic question: what has Shemita (the sabbatical year) to do with Mount Sinai? Were not all the commandments given to Moses at Sinai?
And the L-rd spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai saying: speak to the children of Israel and say to them, when you come to the Land which I give you, the Land shall rest a Shabbat for the L-rdLeviticus 25:1-2
How do we know that all the commandments were given at Sinai? From the closing verse of Leviticus: "These are the commandments which the L-rd commanded Moses for the children of Israel at Mount Sinai." All the commandments — in their general principle and in their detail. So why does Shemita alone receive this exclusive headline?
The classic answer: Shemita is a perfect package. It contains laws between man and his fellow (gleanings, the forgotten sheaf, the corner of the field, cancellation of debts), laws between man and G-d (Shabbat of the Land for the L-rd), and laws bound to the Land. Three categories in one stroke. The Torah says: if I detail this one entirely — you will understand that every mitzvah was given at Sinai with the same precision.
🔷 But there is a strangeness in Rashi's formulation. He does not say "what has Shemita to do with Sinai" — he says "what has Shemita to do by Sinai" (etzel Har Sinai). Why "by"? Here a hidden door opens.
3 Mah = Adam · Shemita = To Release
By the path of mussar, we can read Rashi's question not as a question — but as question and answer together. Because the word "by" (etzel) points to a location of answer, not of problem.
The word Mah in gematria equals 45 — exactly like Adam. When Moses describes himself and Aaron, he says: "And we — what (mah) are we, that you complain against us?" We — mah. That is: man. Just flesh and blood. Asking questions.
So we read Rashi this way: Mah (the human) asks — what is happening with me? What is the point? The answer: Shemita. From shamot, to leave, to release. You will not understand all the answers. Stop trying to hold on. And where are all the answers really? By Mount Sinai.
4 The Farmer and Trust — A Real Test of Faith
A parable of a farmer who has a watermelon field, a wheat field, a mulberry field. His whole life he says to himself: "My power and the might of my hand have made me this wealth."
The Torah comes and says: "Six years you shall sow your field" — no problem. But in the seventh year: ownerless. You release all the fields. A full year. No crops. No income.
🔷 This is the test. Do you believe that even if you release the soil — G-d will provide you food in the seventh year, and the eighth, and until you recover and start sowing again? That is serious faith.
For us, the salaried, the test is small — six days of work, the seventh Shabbat. But for the farmer — a full year. Only one who can release and say "there is nothing besides Him" passes this test. What has Shemita to do with Sinai? Go study Torah. G-d will provide sustenance.
5 "I Will Remember My Covenant with Yaakov" — In the Middle of Rebuke?
In parashat Behukotai, in the middle of the 49 admonitions, suddenly a verse that sounds positive: "And I will remember My covenant with Yaakov...". How does this fit? How can one remember with love — at the peak of anger?
And I will remember My covenant with Yaakov, and also My covenant with Yitshak, and also My covenant with Avraham I will remember — and the Land I will rememberLeviticus 26:42
Two questions: (1) The words "I will remember" sound intuitively positive — how are they in the heart of the rebuke? (2) The order is reversed: Yaakov before Yitshak before Avraham. Why?
A parable of a son of privilege. A young man, 16 or 17. Raised in a top school. Perfect grades. Silver spoon. Lacked nothing. He grew bored, looked for action. Connected with a street gang. One of them, a veteran thief his age, said: "Let's break into a store." They went together at night. They were caught. Brought before the judge. The judge to the veteran offender: three months. To the son of privilege: one year. "What is this?!" he shouts. "We were together! It's not fair!" The judge: "He grew up without a father and mother, he needs to steal to feed his siblings. But you? You studied in the best schools. You lacked nothing. You must learn a greater lesson than him."
That is what the Torah says: I will remember My covenant with Yaakov — have you forgotten your father?! And also My covenant with Yitshak — forgotten your grandfather? And also My covenant with Avraham — from your great-grandfather? You are children of giants. How did you fall into idolatry, into forbidden unions, into bloodshed, into senseless hatred? I exile you from the Land — and you cannot claim "we did not know."
6 Three Pillars · Three Merits
But "I will remember" still does not sound like anger. It sounds like love. How is it possible that in the middle of anger there is love?
The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot says: "On three things the world stands — on Torah, on worship, and on acts of loving-kindness." And these three pillars correspond to the three patriarchs.
Torah · Yaakov
"You will grant truth to Yaakov." Truth is Torah. Yaakov = the man of truth.
Worship · Yitshak
The binding. The offerings. And when there is no Temple — the prayers. Yitshak = the man of worship.
Hessed · Avraham
"Hessed for Avraham." Avraham welcomed guests, opened his tent on all four sides. The man of loving-kindness.
🔷 G-d says: when I want to show mercy, I will check. Are there among you Torah scholars like Yaakov? If so — I will remember My covenant with Yaakov. None? Are there at least those who pray, like Yitshak? A woman who lights Shabbat candles. A husband who prays once a day. I will remember Yitshak too. Not even this? Are there among you those who do hessed? — and there is no scenario in which the people of Israel lack people of hessed.
📅 October 7th. People who never set foot in a Beith Haknesset their whole lives — cooked for soldiers, opened their homes to refugees, drove south at no cost. This is the people of Israel. There is no scenario where you are stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire and nobody stops to help. People of hessed, children of people of hessed.
7 "And the Land I Will Remember" — The Final Merit
And if even Torah, worship, and hessed are absent? Are the merits exhausted? No. One more remains — and it, say the Sages, is equal to the entire Torah.
The verse continues: "And the Land I will remember." What is this? The commandment of settling the Land of Israel. Even a person who does not strictly keep Torah and mitzvot — if he says "I will not leave the Land," if he accepts upon himself the missiles, the shells, the operations — this merit alone weighs against the entire Torah.
🔷 "And the Land I will remember" = the Land of Israel testifies for you. The Shekhinah is here. "The eyes of the L-rd your G-d are on it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year." Whoever sits in it — is under G-d's eyes always.
Right after "and the Land I will remember" comes: "And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I have not rejected them nor abhorred them to destroy them utterly, to break My covenant with them." Which covenant? The covenant of the patriarchs + the covenant of the Land. These merits never expire. There will always be a Redemption.
8 Five Times Yaako"v · Five Times Eliyah"
Suddenly, without warning, Rashi drops a strange detail. In our verse "I will remember My covenant with Yaakov" — Yaakov is written with a vav. Usually Yaakov is written without a vav. Here: Yaakov with a vav. What is the story?
Rashi says: in five places in the Bible the name Yaakov is written full — Yaako"v. And correspondingly, in five places, the name Eliyahu is written missing — Eliyah", without a vav. The most famous verse: "Behold, I send you Eliyah the prophet" — where is the vav?

This is a cosmic game. Jacob took Elijah's vav as a pledge. Collateral. The way a lender holds a watch as security on a loan. "Until you announce the Redemption, I do not return your letter."
⭐ But here the big question: do you suspect Elijah the prophet? Will Elijah receive an order from Heaven and not execute it?! Not plausible. So why a pledge? Why collateral? Here — you enter the secret.
9 Secret of Patah Eliyahu — One Second of Hesitation
Why did Jacob take a pledge? The answer — through Patah Eliyahu.
In Patah Eliyahu (introduction to Tikkunei Zohar, recited every morning by Sephardim), Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai opens: "To You, L-rd, is the greatness, the might, the splendor, the eternity, the glory...". And in the heart of the opening, the Zohar exposes the critical moment of the Redemption.
אִלֵּין אִינוּן דְּמִיכִין דְּחֶבְרוֹן וְרַעְיָא מְהֵימְנָא, אִתְעָרוּ מִשְּׁנַתְכוֹן
Ileyn inun demikhin de-Hevron ve-Ra'ya Mehemna — ita'aru mi-shenat'khon
"These are the sleepers of Hebron, and the faithful Shepherd — awake from your slumber!" "Sleepers of Hebron" = Avraham, Yitshak, and Yaakov, sleepers of the Cave of Machpelah. "Faithful Shepherd" = Moshe Rabbenu. Who awakens them?
Patah Eliyahu · Introduction to Tikkunei Zohar
Elijah the prophet. He is the one who receives the call from G-d at the moment the clock of the Redemption starts ticking. He is the one who goes to the Cave of Machpelah — to awaken the giants.
🔷 And this is Jacob's fear. Imagine the moment: Elijah arrives. He sees before him Avraham — father of the nation. Yitshak — the man of the binding. Yaakov — the man of truth. Moshe — the faithful Shepherd. And who is he compared to them? One second of hesitation. One second. "Who am I to herald?" — and the train of the Redemption has already passed to the next generation.
So Jacob approached him while still alive: "My beloved, I take your vav as a pledge." Not because I suspect you. But: "Do not think twice. Do not hesitate. The moment you receive the order — jump. Awaken the patriarchs. Announce the Redemption. Without one second of delay. Because one second — weighs generations."
⭐ This is the secret. The Redemption depends not only on our actions — but also on timing. And Jacob, in his wisdom of time, locked in the timing. Elijah's vav is the insurance of the people of Israel that not one second is lost at the critical moment. A Redemption engineered down to the second.

Call one of your parents — or, if they are no longer here, someone who grew up near them. Ask: "What would they expect of me today?" Write the answer. That is your vezakharti.
WEDNESDAY · Pick a Pillar
Today choose one of the three: Torah, worship, or hessed. Fulfill it one notch above your usual standard. A longer class. A slower prayer. A kindness that genuinely costs you something.
THURSDAY · And the Land I Will Remember
Give 18 shekels (or the equivalent) to a charity in Israel. Or write to a soldier's family. Or do one thing that connects you to this Land. If you are abroad — plan a visit.
FRIDAY NIGHT · Without Hesitation
Before Kiddush: identify one mitzvah you did this week with a second of hesitation. Say in your heart: "Next week — without Elijah's vav. Without a pledge. Straight to action." One second = generations.
SHABBAT · At the Torah Reading
When you hear "And I will remember My covenant with Yaako"v" — without saying anything aloud, notice the vav. One moment of awareness. And that is already a pledge of Redemption.
